Parliamentarians Thupten Gyatso and Tenzin Yangkar Attend 5th General Meeting of Tibetan Associations in Europe

Dharamshala, 31 August 2026: The 5th General Meeting of Tibetan Associations in Europe was held in Berlin, Germany, from 29–30 August 2026, bringing together representatives of Tibetan communities and organisations from across Europe to deliberate on key issues concerning the Tibetan community and the preservation of Tibetan identity.

Parliamentarians Thupten Gyatso and Tenzin Yangkar, who represent Tibetans in Europe, attended the meeting along with three representatives of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Secretary of the Paris Bureau du Tibet, the European Tibetan Liaison Officer, International Campaign for Tibet President Tenchoe Gyatso, and presidents, vice presidents, and delegates representing Tibetan associations from 12 European countries.
The meeting deliberated on a range of issues concerning the Tibetan community in Europe and adopted several important decisions and resolutions.
As part of the deliberations, the meeting resolved to organise a large-scale commemoration of the 2027 Tibetan National Uprising Day in Berlin, Germany, with the participation of Tibetan associations from across Europe.
The meeting also expressed concern over the implementation by the Chinese government, beginning 1 July 2026, of policies under the so-called “Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress,” which participants said are aimed at undermining and eradicating Tibetan national identity in Tibet.
In response to these developments, the conference resolved to strengthen weekend Tibetan language schools across Europe and to organise a major European Convention for the Preservation of Tibetan Identity in 2028. The initiatives aim to reinforce the preservation and transmission of the Tibetan language, culture, and identity among younger generations of Tibetans in Europe.
The conference also adopted resolutions concerning measures to promptly and effectively counter instances of defamation against His Holiness the Dalai Lama within the Tibetan exile community. Participants further agreed to intensify Tibet advocacy campaigns across European countries and strengthen efforts to raise awareness of the Tibetan issue among European governments, parliamentarians, civil society, and the general public.
In order to strengthen the organisational framework and ensure greater coordination for future General Meetings of Tibetan Associations in Europe, the conference established a committee tasked with drafting regulations governing the organisation and conduct of future meetings.
