Dharamshala, 25 November 2025: Khenpo Sonam Tenphel, Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, extended his heartfelt condolences on the passing of Senator Jean François Humbert, a long-time supporter and true friend of Tibet.

Offering his condolences, the Speaker, in a letter to Mrs. Agnes Humbert, wife of the late senator, wrote: “It is with deep sorrow that I learned the sad demise of your beloved husband , the Hon’ble former Senator Jean François Humbert. who was a steadfast friend of Tibet throughout his life, supporting the just cause of Tibet and Tibetans at both domestic and the international platform. His departure is a profound loss to all who believed in truth, non-violence and human dignity.”

“Senator Humbert consistently advocated for Tibet in the French Senate, urging the European Union to adopt stronger and principled positions in its engagement with China. He was among those who encouraged the appointment of a Special Representative for Tibetan Affairs. Through his parliamentary efforts, he courageously spoke out against the cultural repression in Tibet, led delegations to Dharamshala, and publicly condemned the cultural destruction taking place inside Tibet. His service as Vice President, and later President (2009–2013), of the International Information Group on Tibet stands as a testament to his deep commitment. His support during His Holiness’s official visit to the French Senate in 2016 remains sincerely cherished.”

“With his passing, the people of France and indeed many around the world have lost a leader whose dedication to human rights, democracy, and human dignity touched countless lives. His legacy will continue to inspire many for years to come.”
