Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel Emphasizes Richness of Tibetan Traditional Education at 8th General Conference on Education

Dharamshala, January 7th 2025: The 8th General Conference on Education, organized by the Department of Education of the Central Tibetan Administration, officially commenced at the Sikyong Auditorium in Dharamshala.

The opening ceremony was graced by Chief Guest Sikyong Penpa Tsering, alongside distinguished guests including Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel, Justice Commissioner Tenzin Lungtok, and Kalon Changra Tharlam Dolma of the Central Tibetan Administration. A total of 210 participants from 61 schools, including directors, headmasters, headmistresses, teachers, and other education representatives, are attending the three-day conference.

In his address, the Speaker praised the invaluable contributions of teachers in shaping Tibetan children through both modern and traditional education. He encouraged the attendees to reflect on their practices throughout the conference in order to further enhance the quality of education within Tibetan society.

The Speaker highlighted key aspects of the Tibetan traditional education system, emphasizing the importance of practice, alongside qualities like comprehension and contemplation. He also referenced the Sutra’s description of ideal teacher qualities: disciplined, gentle, peaceful, wise, diligent, well-versed in scripture, realized in the true nature of reality, eloquent, loving, and unaffected by material concerns or weariness in teaching.

In addition, the Speaker encouraged teachers to inspire students to develop a strong understanding of their studies, as well as to cultivate determination and hard work. He also spoke about the special bond between teachers and students, highlighting the crucial role teachers play in shaping students’ lives. The Speaker emphasized the importance of teachers’ efforts to bring all students together, regardless of their intelligence levels, backgrounds, or other differences.

He further stressed the collective responsibility of teachers, administrative staff, and all stakeholders to collaboratively raise Tibetan children with expertise in specialized fields. In conclusion, the Speaker urged everyone present to discuss ways to enhance the quality of education through the combined efforts of teachers, administrators, and other involved parties.
