Dharamshala: A delegation from the US International Campaign for Tibet (ICT), led by President Tenchoe Gyatso, visited the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile on October 21, 2024.

They met with Deputy Speaker Dolma Tsering Teykhang, who provided insights into the structure, history, and operations of the Parliament. Following a guided tour of the parliament hall, the delegation participated in a meeting at the standing committee’s hall.

Welcoming the visiting delegates, the Deputy Speaker expressed appreciation for their commitment to Tibet despite the challenges, emphasizing that their presence sends a strong message to the world that the Sino-Tibetan conflict remains unresolved, and the Tibetan struggle continues to garner global support.

The Deputy Speaker underscored the critical situation in Tibet under Chinese occupation, noting the 157 documented self-immolations in protest, as well as China’s systematic targeting of Tibetan language, culture, and religion. She highlighted the coercion of Tibetan children, some as young as five, into colonial boarding schools, depriving them of their heritage.

Other significant issues raised included the severe human rights situation in Tibet, China’s use of the one-China policy to legitimize its claims over Tibet, and the environmental challenges posed by China’s unchecked exploitation of the Tibetan Plateau. She specifically pointed out the importance of Tibet’s rivers, which serve as vital sources of fresh water for billions in Southeast Asia.

The Deputy Speaker concluded by urging the delegates to amplify the voices of Tibetans and share their message with the world.

The members of the ICT led by President Tenchoe Gyatso were presented with Tibetan ceremonial scarves and mementos by the Deputy Speaker.
